Exploring the Legacy of Indonesian Experimental Cinema through ARKIPEL Film Collective

Bandung, May 2025 — A recent publication by Dyah Ayu Wiwid Sintowoko, member of CoE Karsaloka at Telkom University, has been officially released in the international journal Cogent Arts & Humanities (Taylor & Francis, 2025). The article, titled “Exploring the Legacy of Indonesian Experimental Cinema through ARKIPEL Film Collective,” delves into the rich history and unique evolution of Indonesian experimental cinema through the works and activism of the ARKIPEL Film Collective.

The study explores how Indonesia’s experimental film movement rooted in community collaboration and artistic freedom has evolved from the colonial era to the present. It highlights ARKIPEL, under Forum Lenteng, as a pivotal organization that integrates archiving, activism, and alternative knowledge production within Indonesia’s independent film ecosystem.

Indonesian experimental cinema carries a distinct identity born from collective spirit and interdisciplinary exploration, said Sintowoko. “Films like Samsara (2024) by Garin Nugroho reflect the essence of expanded cinema by merging traditional gamelan music, performance art, and black-and-white cinematography into a unified cinematic experience.”

Through qualitative research and thematic analysis, the study involved interviews with key figures such as Yuki Aditya and Hafiz Rancajale (ARKIPEL/Forum Lenteng), Gorivana Ageza (Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival), and Retno Ratih Damayanti, costume designer for Samsara. Findings reveal that Indonesia’s experimental cinema is deeply tied to activism and independent artistic expression rather than mainstream industrial norms.

Sintowoko emphasizes that Indonesian experimental films deserve greater visibility at national and international festivals, not only as artistic expressions but also as valuable cultural assets contributing to the creative economy.

This research was funded by Telkom University under grant number 445/lit06/PPM-lit/2024.
