Bandung – 25 December 2025. A team of lecturers from the School of Creative Industries (FIK), Telkom University, carried out a Community Service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PkM) program in the form of a grant and design development of an innovative business pushcart for the Tunas Melati Orphanage in Bandung City. The initiative aims to support the orphanage’s economic self-reliance by providing functional, representative, and ready-to-use business facilities for various micro-enterprise activities.

The program was led by Hanif Azhar, a lecturer in the Product Design Study Program at FIK Telkom University. In its implementation, the team adopted an applied product design approach, focusing on the development of a flexible and multifunctional business pushcart. The cart was designed to accommodate various types of business activities run by the orphanage, allowing it to adapt to changing economic needs.

According to Hanif Azhar, the activity represents a direct implementation of product design knowledge that he has been teaching in the classroom. “As a lecturer of the Circular Design course in the Undergraduate Product Design Program, I see the importance of sharing design practices that are not only applicable but also socially impactful. This pushcart was designed not merely as a selling tool, but as a productive asset that can be reused and sustainably utilized by the orphanage,” he explained.

The design process was conducted through several stages, including field observation, needs assessment discussions with the orphanage management, design concept development, and the realization of the pushcart. The final design took into account functionality, mobility, ease of maintenance, and visual appearance to ensure it is attractive and well received by consumers. This approach is expected to enhance the competitiveness of micro-enterprises operated by the orphanage.

The Chairman of the Tunas Melati Orphanage Foundation in Bandung, Ustadz Didin, expressed his appreciation for the program. He emphasized that the grant and design of the business cart provided tangible benefits for the orphanage.

“This program is highly beneficial in strengthening the economic independence of the orphanage. The cart not only supports our business activities but also brings new motivation for the children to learn how to be independent and productive,” he stated.

He further added that having proper and representative business facilities greatly assists the orphanage in developing economic activities without relying solely on donations. With the availability of the business pushcart, the orphanage now has greater opportunities to reach the wider community and expand its independent business initiatives.

This community service activity also reflects Telkom University’s commitment to implementing the tridharma of higher education, particularly in delivering contextual design solutions for society. Through the synergy between product design expertise and the real needs of community partners, the program is expected to serve as a model of applied, sustainable, and design-based community engagement.

Looking ahead, the team hopes that similar initiatives can be further developed and replicated in other social institutions facing comparable challenges, thereby expanding the role of product design as a tool for community economic empowerment.
