Ergonomic Folding Chairs as a Space-Saving Solution for RW 07 Jayamekar Community Office

Bandung – January 2026. RW (neighborhood association) office plays a vital role as a hub for community activities, including regular meetings, public deliberations, and collective initiatives. However, limited space and inadequate facilities remain common challenges in many local offices, including RW 07 Community Office in Jayamekar Village. One of the most significant issues faced by residents is the lack of proper seating. Existing chairs are limited in number, uncomfortable for prolonged use, difficult to arrange, and inconvenient to store after activities. As a result, the office space becomes quickly overcrowded and lacks flexibility to accommodate diverse community functions.

Based on field observations and interviews with RW administrators, the problem extends beyond spatial limitations. It also involves the low level of comfort provided by conventional chairs and the absence of an efficient furniture storage system. Comfort and effective space management are essential factors in supporting productive interactions and improving the quality of community activities.

To address these challenges, the community service team designed an ergonomic folding chair that is compact, functional, and adaptable to limited spaces. The design process adopted a participatory approach, actively involving local residents from the initial stages. It began with needs assessment, followed by collaborative discussions and idea exploration through product sketches, leading to the selection of a final design that met ergonomic standards, material strength requirements, and spatial efficiency considerations.

The resulting product is a folding chair that is easy to move, comfortable to use, and can be neatly folded and stored when not in use. This design effectively optimizes the available space at the RW 07 Jayamekar Office while supporting the smooth implementation of various community activities. Cost analysis also indicates that the chair can be produced at an affordable cost, making it feasible for community-level implementation.

Beyond serving as functional furniture, this ergonomic folding chair represents a simple yet impactful solution rooted in local needs and community participation. The innovation is expected to enhance the quality of facilities at the RW office and serve as a model for community-based product design that can be replicated in other areas with similar conditions.
